Wall area is width × height for each wall, summed up. Deductions are subtracted from that total. The tile count is net area divided by the area of one tile, rounded up. Wastage is an extra percentage added on top to cover cuts, offcuts, and the inevitable broken tile.
10% is the usual minimum for plain straight-lay. Bump it up to 15% for diagonal patterns or complicated cuts, and 20% for mosaics or herringbone. If in doubt, order a box extra - it's always cheaper than a second delivery.
